Metric vs Imperial: The Ultimate Conversion Guide
Feb 8, 2025 · 11 min read
The US still measures road trips in miles while science and most of the world use kilometers. Recipe writers mix cups and grams. A conversion cheat sheet in your head plus a reliable tool prevents expensive mistakes—medication dosages, freight weights, and 3D printer filament included.
Metric vs imperial at a glance
Metric ties units to powers of ten: milli-, centi-, kilo-. Imperial (US customary) uses inches, feet, miles, pounds, gallons—historical ratios that do not scale by tens. UK imperial differs slightly (pints, stone)—know which country a document assumes.
| Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|
| 1 inch | 2.54 cm |
| 1 mile | 1.609 km |
| 1 pound (lb) | 0.454 kg |
| 1 US gallon | 3.785 L |
| 1 °F offset | use formula, not ratio |
Length and distance
Multiply miles by 1.609 for kilometers. For rough mental math: 5 miles ≈ 8 km. Running apps often default to km outside the US—toggle carefully when comparing PRs.
Mass vs weight vs volume
Pounds measure mass in everyday US speech (technically force in physics). Ounces (fluid) measure volume; ounces (weight) measure mass—context disambiguates. A cup of flour weighs less than a cup of sugar—volume-to-mass needs ingredient density tables.
- Baking: grams are more repeatable than cups
- Shipping: know whether quotes use kg or lb
- Medicine: mg vs mL confusion causes dosing errors
Temperature conversion
Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = C × 9/5 + 32. Quick anchors: 0°C = 32°F, 100°C = 212°F, room ~20°C ≈ 68°F. Temperature intervals convert by 9/5; do not multiply a fever reading by 1.8 without the offset.
Cooking, fitness, and DIY
- 1
Identify unit type
Length, mass, volume, or temperature—never mix formulas.
- 2
Convert to one system
Complete entire recipe in grams or ounces, not both.
- 3
Double-check critical values
Fasteners, doses, and clearances need exact conversion.
Convert without tab hoarding
Search engines answer one-off questions but hide unit assumptions (US vs UK gallon). A dedicated converter lists categories and constants explicitly.
The Unit Converter on XSular Tools covers length, mass, volume, and temperature with clear labels—paste a project spec and copy metric equivalents for your international supplier.
